TUFTED DUCK

The Tufted Duck is a diving duck common on lakes, reservoirs, rivers and occasionally on the sea.  All black apart from thick white bands down each side of the body and yellow eyes with the female not having the white bands and more of a dark brown body.  Both sexes have the tuft of feather running from the back of the head and down the back of the neck with the male having the longer tuft.  There are 7,500 pairs in the UK with that number rising to 110,000 between September and April.

Length: 40-47cm (16-18½in)

Wingspan: 67-73cm (26-29in)

Weight: 450-1,000g (16-36oz)

Average Life: 10-15 years
