GOLDFINCH

This small and very colourful finch has red on its face, with black and white on the rest of the head and a yellow and black bands on its wings and tail.  The rest of the body is made up of white & chestnut brown coloured feathers.  The juvenile has none of the red, white & black on its head but develops the colours as it gets older.  The Goldfinch can be found right across the UK on farmland, heaths, scrub and in gardens.  This bird is a regular visitor to the feeders in my garden and there are currently 300,000 pairs in the UK.

Length: 12.5-13cm (5in)

Wingspan: 21-25cm (8½-10in)

Weight: 14-17g (½-¾oz)

Average Life: 2-3 years
