TURNSTONE

The Turnstone is a small, stocky, long bodied wading bird that can be found on estuaries, sandy beaches, stony beaches and rocky shores.  In summer the Turnstone has a black and white head with a bright rusty ginger and black back and wings.  In winter the Turnstone has a black breast, black/brown back and pale chest side.  The underside is white and legs/feet are orange all year round.  There are an estimated 50,000 that visit the UK between August and May.

Length: 21-24cm (8½-9½in)             

Wingspan: 44-49cm (17½-19½in)

Weight: 80-110g (2¾-3¾oz)             

Lifespan: Up to 10 years
