SANDERLING

The Sanderling is a small beach sandpiper typically found at the waters edge on sand and also on mudflats.  The Sanderling runs beside waves and picks its food from the sand or mud.  During spring the Sanderling has a marbled black/rufous/white breast with the white wearing off to reveal brighter colours during the summer months.  By autumn they become duller but retain rusty red neck and by winter are pale grey and white in colour.  Up to 18,000 Sanderlings can be found in the UK between August and May.
