BULLFINCH

The Bullfinches are usually seen in pairs, with the male having a bright pink / red breast and grey back, the female with a light brownish breast and dark brown back.  Both have black wings, tails and a black cap on their head covering the eye.  It is found right across the UK and is a regular visitor to my garden, nationally there are an estimated 158,000 pairs breeding.  The Bullfinch can be quite a reclusive but not shy bird found in woodland, thickets, hedgerows and orchards.  There are also eleven other species of Bullfinch not found in the UK: Brown, White-Cheeked, Orange, Red-Headed, Grey-Headed, Azores, Puerto Rican, Greater Antillean, Lesser Antillean, Barbados and Cuban.
